Bio

Ángel Campo Solana lived in Liermo with his wife and children. He had moved to Liermo a few years before the events recorded about him.

He used a nearby piece of land for livestock and for storing things. That land did not officially belong to anyone. Solana was also a hunter and was often seen with a shotgun.

The local municipality and the district council later decided to build a playground on that land. Members of the district council and the Civil Guard asked him to clear the site. Solana refused to clear it because he considered the area his own.

Murder Story

On the evening of November 27, 1980 in Liermo, Ángel Solana killed seven people and wounded one. He left his home with a shotgun, ammunition, and a yellow raincoat. It was cold and raining. He walked to the main street of Liermo, greeted a neighbor, and shot him. He went to the house of the chairman of the district council and shot the chairman and his brother inside the house. The chairman's daughter and grandchildren ran away. He shot the chairman's wife in a meadow near the house as she fled.

He went to look for another neighbor. In a neighbor's house he found the neighbor's wife and asked where her husband was. He found the husband on the farm and shot him while the wife cried. He then found another neighbor and his brother and shot them both. He also shot a woman and wounded her in the neck and face. After that he went to the cemetery in Langre, climbed into an excavated grave, and shot himself in the jaw.

After the shooting, the Civil Guard wanted him. Residents of Liermo and nearby villages stayed at home. His body was found by accident on November 30. An autopsy found he had shot himself on the night of November 28. His watch had stopped at 2:30.

Ángel Campo Solana was 64 and lived in Liermo with his wife and children. He had moved to Liermo a few years before the shooting. The municipality and the district council decided to build a playground on land Solana used. The land did not belong to anyone, and Solana used it for livestock and storage. After the decision, members of the district council and the Civil Guard asked that the site be cleared. Solana refused because he considered the land his own. Investigators found his first main targets were three members of the district council and their relatives. His later targets were members of the Veci family, due to quarrels and personal animosity. Because the victims' houses were far apart and people often hunted there with shotguns, many did not understand what was happening. Solana was also a hunter and was often seen with a shotgun. His family tried to buy the grave where he shot himself but could not, and he was buried in a nearby grave.
