murder story
In early 2001, Andrew Simon Aston began a series of violent attacks on elderly and disabled people in Birmingham and surrounding areas. Over a period of three months, he attacked 26 victims during robberies at their homes. His first robbery occurred on January 12, 2001, when he targeted a 71-year-old man in Smethwick, taking £100 from him.
Throughout January, Aston continued to rob elderly individuals, hitting eight more victims by the end of the month. The oldest among them was an 85-year-old woman. In February, he committed two more robberies in Smethwick on the 9th. The following day, he attacked a 63-year-old woman in Ladywood before returning to Smethwick for two additional robberies. Aston robbed a 74-year-old woman on February 19, then struck again on February 22, targeting a 90-year-old woman in her home.
As February progressed, Aston continued his spree. On February 25, he robbed a 60-year-old man of £80 and then headed to Tipton, where he robbed an 86-year-old man of £200. His attacks continued through March, with nine more robberies mostly aimed at elderly victims. He was finally arrested on March 31, 2001, while assaulting and attempting to rob a 92-year-old man in Sheldon.
After his arrest, Aston was questioned about the attack on 87-year-old George Dale, who had been assaulted on March 16. George died in the hospital two weeks after the attack. Aston was charged with multiple thefts and assaults soon after. On April 5, 2001, he was charged with George Dale's murder. Following the death of another victim, 80-year-old Frank Hobley, in June, Aston faced another murder charge.
By January 2002, six of his surviving victims had passed away, and another six were too frail to testify against him. His trial began that month. On February 20, 2002, Aston was found guilty of two murders and 24 other charges related to his assaults and robberies. He received a sentence of 26 concurrent life sentences, marking one of the longest prison sentences in England and Wales.
