1988Alphonso Stripling was born in 1957. He grew up in a time and place that faced many challenges. As a young man, Stripling's life took a troubling turn. By 1973, he found himself involved in criminal activities. He was convicted of armed robbery that year, and this was just the beginning. He would face the law again for similar crimes in 1979 and 1980.
In the years leading up to the tragic events in 1988, Stripling held different jobs. He worked as a cook trainee at a fast-food restaurant in Douglasville, Georgia. This job was part of his daily life as he struggled with his past while trying to build a future.
Alphonso Stripling committed his crimes on October 15, 1988, in a fast-food restaurant in Douglasville, Georgia. He shot four employees of the restaurant while attempting to rob it, resulting in the deaths of two employees: Anthony Evans, aged 19, and Gregory Bass, aged 34. Following the shooting, Stripling took the cash receipts from the restaurant and stole a getaway car at gunpoint.
Shortly after the robbery and shooting, law enforcement officers arrested Stripling after a high-speed chase. At the time of his arrest, he had in his possession the stolen car, the restaurant's cash receipts, and the gun he used for the murders.
Stripling was charged with multiple offenses, including two counts of murder, armed robbery, and aggravated assault. A jury in Douglas County convicted him of these charges. On July 28, 1989, he received a death sentence for the two murder counts. He appealed the verdict, but the conviction and sentences were upheld by the court.
