murder story

Alfred Bye had a troubled relationship with Amelia Ogier. After a failed engagement in 1933, he tried to reconnect with her in 1941. However, Amelia had moved on and was in a relationship with Thomas Edward Walker. Bye's attempts to win Ogier back were unwanted, leading to a confrontation.

On September 27, 1941, Bye took a train to Melbourne, bringing a knife he had purchased weeks earlier. He knew Ogier would be at Flinders Street station with Walker and her nieces. When he approached them, Walker stepped in to protect Ogier. The situation escalated quickly. Bye thought Walker was about to hit him, so he attacked first.

After a brief encounter, Bye and Walker moved to the Treasury Gardens for a confrontation. In the fight, Bye stabbed Walker multiple times in the chest and neck. After the attack, Bye discarded the knife and left the scene, returning to Bacchus Marsh by train that night.

Bye was arrested and put on trial in the Melbourne Supreme Court. The jury found him guilty of murder, delivering their verdict in just forty-five minutes. Judge Charles Leonard Gavan Duffy sentenced Bye to death. During the proceedings, Bye claimed he had acted in self-defense. He was executed on December 22, 1941, and buried at Pentridge Prison in Coburg. Leading up to his execution, Bye was extremely anxious and had to be strapped to a chair because he could not stand.
