1986 - 1996Albert Johnson Walker was born in 1946 in Paris, Ontario, Canada. He did not finish high school and dropped out at an early age. After leaving school, Walker took on various odd jobs before becoming a bank teller at a trust company. He later started a freelance bookkeeping business and began preparing income tax returns for others.
Over time, Walker's business, named Walker Financial, grew significantly. It expanded to multiple branches and employed around thirty people. However, in 1986, a major investment he made failed, leading to significant financial troubles. As a mortgage broker, he deceived around seventy clients, resulting in losses of about $3.2 million. In 1990, facing charges, Walker fled Canada with his daughter Sheena, who was fifteen at the time.
After leaving Canada, Walker settled in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, England. He lived there with Sheena, who pretended to be his wife. During their time in England, Walker met Ronald Joseph Platt, a television repairman from Canada. He befriended Platt and convinced him to plan a move to Canada. He took Platt's driver's license and birth certificate under the guise of helping him with business matters.
Walker eventually changed his name to David Davis and continued to build a false life in England. He maintained constant contact with the real Ronald Platt, who returned to England after a short time in Canada. As Walker's cover began to crumble, he saw Platt as a threat to his new identity.
On July 20, 1996, Albert Johnson Walker took his business partner, Ronald Joseph Platt, out on a fishing trip. They sailed into the English Channel, where Walker attacked Platt. He knocked him unconscious and tied an anchor to him. After that, he threw Platt overboard into the sea.
Two weeks later, a fisherman discovered Platt's body. It was tangled in his fishing nets, and he was wearing a Rolex watch. This watch had a serial number that allowed British police to trace it to Platt. They soon identified him as the victim.
The investigation revealed that Platt had been missing for weeks. Police began to look into Walker, who was living under the assumed name of David Davis. They found that he had used Platt's identity after the real Platt had moved to Canada.
On October 31, 1997, police arrested Walker for Platt's murder. They also found large amounts of gold that Walker had been trying to hide. As the case went forward, investigators gathered strong circumstantial evidence against him.
Walker was tried for the murder of Ronald Platt in 1998. After a short deliberation, the jury found him guilty. He received a life sentence for the murder. The court noted that Walker’s killing of Platt was premeditated and planned with care.
In 2005, Walker was transferred to a Canadian prison to face charges related to fraud and embezzlement from before his flight to the UK. He continued to serve his life sentence there.
