— Abel Revilla Ohoa
Abel Revilla Ochoa was born on January 23, 1973, in Vicente Guerrero, Durango, Mexico. He grew up in a Hispanic family. His parents worked hard to provide for him.
Abel moved to the United States at some point in his early life. He settled in Dallas County, Texas. He worked as a heavy equipment operator and laborer. Abel attended school and completed up to the 12th grade. He eventually got married in December 1993 to Cecelia, and together they had two daughters, Crystal and Ana.
Abel's life took a turn for the worse after he became addicted to crack cocaine. This addiction caused significant problems in his marriage and personal life. Before his struggles with drugs, he was seen as a responsible and hardworking man. However, after losing his job and facing personal stress, his behavior changed.
Abel’s relationship with his wife also became strained. In August 1997, he discovered that Cecelia had a child named Jonathan from a previous relationship. This revelation led to a period of separation between the couple. Their marriage faced many challenges due to Abel's anger and frustrations, particularly regarding the situation with Jonathan.
As the years went by, Abel's struggles with addiction worsened. He had entered drug rehabilitation programs but found it hard to stay clean. These issues increasingly affected his family life, leading to tensions at home.
Before the tragic events of August 4, 2002, Abel was living with his wife, their two daughters, and his father-in-law, Bartolo. He had been out of work for several months, adding to the stress in his marriage.
On August 4, 2002, in Dallas County, Texas, Abel Revilla Ochoa shot and killed five family members. His victims included his 29-year-old wife, Cecelia; their two daughters, Crystal, who was seven years old, and Ana, who was just nine months old; his father-in-law, Bartolo Alivizo, who was 56; and his sister-in-law, Jacqueline Saleh, who was 20. The method of murder was shooting.
The crime scene was the family's home, where the shootings took place. After the incident, Abel Ochoa attempted to escape in the family's SUV. He was arrested later that day at a nearby shopping center when witnesses observed him. The police did not determine a clear motive for the shootings, but they stated that Ochoa had been upset over something involving his wife.
After his arrest, Ochoa was charged with multiple counts of murder. The police reported that he exhibited signs of distress and admitted to struggling with the pressures of family life. He was later sentenced to death on May 15, 2003, after a jury convicted him of capital murder. There were no co-defendants involved in this case.
