HYANNIS, MASSACHUSETTS — Edward Gillespie, 62, was arrested on January 8 after investigators said a would-be car thief reported finding a large package of suspected cocaine inside the trunk of a vehicle in Hyannis. Authorities allege Gillespie was trafficking the drugs from Hyannis to Nantucket.

Attempted Car Theft Leads to Tip
Officials said the incident began on January 6 in a commuter lot in Hyannis. The suspect attempted to steal a Kia and pried open the steering column with a screwdriver but could not start the vehicle.
Investigators said the person then opened the trunk while searching for valuables and found a large package of suspected cocaine.
Surveillance and Arrest
After the report, officers placed a camera near the vehicle, authorities said. Gillespie was taken into custody two days later.
The would-be car thief initially told officers the drugs were found on the side of a road before later admitting the package was discovered during the attempted theft. Authorities have not announced whether charges will be filed against the would-be car thief.

Drugs and Cash Seized
Authorities said they seized 1,141 grams of cocaine, 68 grams of amphetamine pills, and approximately $10,000 in cash.
